Well at least thats what I found when I started to do more in depth reading on christianity and its roots. I think it was nearly two years ago that an old friend mentioned the name “Barnabus” when having a _ long discussion about various religions. What I heard about this particular person and his relation to christianity stuck with me for a long while. I decided to read up on this guy and the shit i’d been hearing. What I found out was incredible to say the least but at the same time not at all surprising. Chistianity and the basis its founded upon is 2 fake just like al) the other organised religions of this world and the evidence is out there all you have to do is go out and find it, But lets start from the beginning.(Note: My research on this subject was done through 3/4 main books that I shall list at the end if you’d like to read. up on what i’ve written here. ‘he gospel of Barnabus is the only known surviving gospel that was written by a disciple of Jesus, that is by a man who spent most of his time in the actual company of Jesus during the three years in which he was delivering his message. It is therefore said that he had direct experience and knowledge of all of Jesus’ teachings, unlike all the authors of the other four accepted gospels. If one has the time to read it and examine it it is at least if anything else an eye witness account of the life of Jesus. It was he who above all endeavoured to hold to the pure teaching of Jesus and opposed any innovators, notably Paul of Tarsus. Now this is where things start to get slightly dodgy! Once Jesus had died many of the apostles scrammbled to. write down the life and teachings of their dead master. As did Barnabus and Paul in which tension was mounting between the two due to disagreements on the interpretation of Jesus’ teachings. Barnabus’ gospel showed Jesus for the actual human being that he was i.e: 4 normal practicing Jew preaching the word of God He maintained the idea that Jesus had no intention of creating a new religion through his ideas. a thought like that would seem horrific both to Jesus and barnabus himself. There was nothing in the message of jesus as understood by him and many other disciples to necessitate a break from what was clearly the continuance and revivifying _the affirmation of the guidance which Moses had brought. This also meant that Jesus could not be the messiah, or in other words that ridiculuos thought that he is the son of God. For a Jew to proclaim himself the messiah would have been a sin and Jesus according to barnabus was a practicing Jew. so the whole basis for the christian religion that Paul will later provide i’e: the divine trinity is already disproven by Barnabus’ gospel. This is the first real idea that I wanted to tatk about. I mean the thing that has been forced down millions of peoples throughts for centuries, this idea that Jesus was the son of God is obviously a hoax! and it becomes more obvious when Paul starts to get involved in the whole thing. Paul of Tarsus was obviously one of the more intelligent of the disciples, he knew that he could take advantage of the death of Jesus and create this whole new religion with him riding at the helm. What would make this religion work and be different would be yep you guessed it to create the mythical figure that Jesus was’nt. The only obstacle to all this was of course Barnabus. Paul apparently went into the Arabian desert to formulate his own version of Jesus’ teachings. This involved a rejection of Jewish law, again contradicting the life and teachings of Jesus. When he returned to meet with the disciples, he claimed to have access to Jesus which had been denied to the closest followers while he was on earth. The teachings he claimed he had been given did not even tally with what the apostles had heard from the very lips of Jesus. Both Barnabus and another apostle Peter believed that Paul’s new doctrine was in the main a purely personal creation of his own.A Schweitzer, in his book “Paul and his Interpreters, says that “Paul never appealed to the sayings and commands of So Pauls vision was created and the Christian religion founded, founded upon false beliefs by a clever and power hungry man. the many years that foolowed made sure that Pauls idea would grow and flourish. UR-Rahim writes “In 325 A.D the famous council of Nicea was held . The doctrine of the trinity was declarde to be the official doctrine of the Pauline church. Only four gospels made it to the bible. The remaining gospels including the gospel of Barnabus were ordered to be completely destroyed. It was also decided that all gospels written in hebrew should be destroyed. An edict was issued stating that anyone found in possesion of an unauthorised gospel especially Barnabus’s would be put to death. This was the first well organised attempt to remove all the records of Jesus’s original teaching, wether in human beings or books.” The attempt to get rid of the gospel was not succesful though and the attempts carried on. Pope damascus 366 AD is recorded as having issued a decree that the gospel of barnabus should not be read. It was included in his list of Apocryphal books. APOCRYPHA simply means hidden from the people. It was also forbidden by the decree of the western churches and Pope Innocent that the “evangelium Barnabe is included in the list of forbidden books. This famous list was also known as the INDEX, a list _of books christians were not to read on “eae pain of death and eternal punishment. I * his master.” But this is what he had in aaa mind if he was to create a new religion, he Same ; wanted to be accredited for the Sage explanation of the new revelations and § teachings. So when Barnabus his main oppsition retired to Cyprus he got his chance. Paul took his show on the road as | SESE ame aes it were, where people started hearing & about jesus with no comparison to the & apostles version. Pauls main aim was to § prpare the way for completely changing § peoples idea of who Christ was. More importantly he was being changed from a man to a conception in people’s minds. This misconception being that of the “divine Jesus”, Jesus the son of GOD!! guess it makes you wonder hey? After a lot of reading I’ve done Ican’t help beliving that this is true or at least near the truth, and reafirms the fact that religion is used by power mongers to control weak and simple minded people, it always has and always will. Its also weird to think how many million souls have perished in the name of christianity, in the name of this fake religion. Ending on a cheesy note The truth is out THERE!!! go find it! Check out any books by these authors, if you want a proper list just write me: UR - Rahim H. Zahrt A A. Schweitzer . Schonfeld. S basic misconception evolved abd became established , many a man thought (and still think) that they are following Jesus when in fact they followed Paul without knowing it. so when people like Heinz Zahrnt called Paul a “corrupter of the gospel of Jesus” there was justification in it. another historian Schonfeld wrote “The Pauline heresy became the foundation of Christian orthodoxy and the legitimatechurch owas disowned as heretical, thus Barnabus became the arch - heretic. AeweiOn K& SeExisil af Oil when you think about it, religion’s actually a buncha crap! i guess the others already gave you a good insight about all that! i personally will be talking about the way many of todays religions treat their women! oh no, you shouldn’t worry, it’s not that i’'ve become one of those PC-dicks, it’s just that this concernes us all. religion has & still is layed out for men. it’s rare that you see female priests or the like. you have your share of female godesses, but they all submit to their male counterparts. for example the old roman godesses had cool powers & all, but were humped by Zeus. you never read anything about them humping Zeus. they might’ve not been been trustworthy, & screwed Zeus over, but in the end they all answered to his judgement!! so right now i’m gonna educate y’all on some religions: i think ll start off with Krishna, one of the big HC-phases of the late 80’s till the middle of the 90’s. it affected us all when Ray & Purzell got sXe involved in religion, but this isn’t the space to accuse them, & i think it’s been done too many times!! Krishna religion actually preaches sexism!! the devotees seperate the women from the men in the temple! a woman- devotee can’t become as fully self realized, so they aren’t equal to their male counterparts! Chapter 1, text 40 of the Bhagavad Gita (the holy book of Krishna written by his divine grace AC_ Bhaktivedanta 8. Swami Prabhupada) states: »women are generally not very intelligent & therefore not trustworthy“. cool, huh? this kinda reminds me of the Ferengi (a StarTrek species that’s all bout business). their rules of acquisition forbid a woman to ever do business cuz they ain’t trustworthy. they also have to run round naked! that’s why you have male Krishna devotees selling shit on the streets& chanting in public, while female devotees stay on the farms & milk cows, or get ,, raped“ by their god Krishna, who once stole the clothes of bathing shepparettes, to do shit to them later! (somewhere in the BhagavatGita, i was too lazy to look that up!) the islam, one of the fastes growing religion of today, isn’t any better, maybe worse! the Islamic Empire was founded 622 AD (isn’t it weird how we all took the birth of Jesus = beginning of time for granted 7?) by the prophet Mohammed. the Muslims believe in their holy book, the KORAN & Mohammed’s decisions & behavioural conducts, aka the SUNNA. the Koran was written down, while the Sunna has been delivered by mouth over the centuries. It’s every muslim’s duty to devote themselves to god & live by the Koran & the Sunna .isilamic tribes fight over the meaning of the Sunna (especially the big ones: the Shiits & the Sunits) & their emphasis on how much one should follow it s principles. Islam (translated from arabic: devotion) doesn’t know any race f# diffrences, but women are hella diffrent from aa men!! a mulim male can have up to 4 wifes & a buncha ,,sidewifes“! it’s looked bad upon not being married & if a female ain’t married, they’ll lose all face in society. females are just married to someone by their family (mostly the father, who’s the boss at home!), they can’t choose for themselves. all these facts differ from tribe to tribe, the Alevits for example see females in a very diffrent ( & slightly better) light than maybe the Arabic Tribes do. these Arabic Tribes believe women have to mask their beauty behind veils, so that’s why you see Arabic men walking upfront a crowd of fat, black ninjas! religious leaders & teachers have misinterpretted the writting of Mohammed, so you have al these diffrent little sects in Islamic countries. Turkey (not really an _ Islamic country, but it’s central religion’s Islam!) is very much like the States or Gmny, while in Saudi Arabia even foreign women have to »veil* up! i remember my mom telling me when i was small: ,if you misbehave the OEDGY’s gonna get you!“ Oedgys were those fat black cloaked Arabic women. my mom’s Turkish & she wouldn’t even think about putting on a veil! so while the men can adulterate, women are left in the Harems, never to be seen again. it’s the worst sin of a muslim woman to cheat on their ,masters“, while men do it all the time! In the religious society of Islam you seldom see women. sexual equality, i don’t think so. now let me get to one of the oldest religions, 4 that still dominates all of western civilizations: Christianity. i know Mother Theresa was a good woman & she did lotsa good, but she still was inferior to ever done by nuns, priestesses or the like. f only men stand up on the altar!! here’s why: man (not Woman) was created in the image of god, who is believed to be an old fart with a white beard. Woman was made from Adam’s (first man-if you believe the Bible) rib! therefore is lesser than man! what a buncha bollox!! And then of course there’s all them cults, where it’s usually women that get killed as human sacrifices, never men! The virgin that gets sacrificed in Satanism (sorry, not a cult, but pretty fitting in this context!) has to be} female. Tell me why can’t it be a male virgin ? | and why does SATAN have to be male?? It} could just as well be a woman ( or af transsexual! RAADDD)!). it’s just a buncha shit, just like we’re let to believe JESUS is white. | mean, he’s from Jerusalem, right? Now look at all the Arabs that live there (oh, yeah, the Jews) and now tell me he’s a blond, blue-eyed chap....get my point......sorry, drifted off. If you look at most (if not all) cults, you always see women in lesser positions. Jehova’s Witness have their women cook, breed & look after the kids & cows. The Mormons can have 3 wifes and have strict rules just like any other cult. Any one swaying’s fucked! The Manson family had women & they all were obedient to Charles Manson (more on this somewhere else). the People’s Temple believed in a woman lesser than a man & therefore she was expendable! Etc etc etc....... fashioned role model: a woman has stay at home, breed, watch the kids & have me dinner ready once i get home. That just shows what a Suncha shit religion actually is!!! -DPM the pope, who is a man! there are no masses Ig i can’t think of one religion or religious cult} that actually liberates women from that old-] Turkish parliament rejects attempt to ban violence against women WOLFGANG KOYDL Istanbul - Sueddeutsche Zeitung w Controversy is raging in Turkey over whether husbands have the right to beat their wives. Absolutely, say members of parlia- ment belonging to the Islamist party Refah. The party has just, for the sec- ond time, blocked a bill to make vio- lence within marriage an offence. And the devout parliamentarians are bringing their own wives’ arguments to bear to make their case for the value of corporal punishment. Saniye Sahin, for example, said beating was “no problem” as far as she was concerned. “Blows are not a punishement,” she said, and recommended that the lay —— of the bill find out for them- selves. She said that both female parliamen- tarians leading the bill were single and so would not know. The wife of Refah MP Kahraman Emmioglu agreed. She advised the two female ministers to marry devout Moslems, saying they would then learn some tolerance. Mrs Sultan Cetin was particularly succinct: “No Moslem husband beats up his wife without good reason.” According to this logic, marital beatings are a necessity. A wife is beaten in Turkey once every 18 sec- onds, official statistics estimate. A study by Haceteppe University in Ankara concluded that 84 per cent of all divorced women were hit during their marriage; 70 per cent were punched and 42 per cent needed hospi- tal treatment as a result of being beaten ‘up by their husbands. Men who beat up their wives have the support of Islamic theologian Bekir Topaloglu, among others. In his book “Women in Islam” he wrote that a man has a right to beat his wife if by doing so he can save their marriage. (GNNS) A perfect example for the oppression of women in countries where the main religion’s Islam don’t get this wrong, tho. A: normally we could care less. to every band it s own. but this whole trend & it s massive spread is getting ridiculous, and most of all hilarious. it remains a question how many really are religiously involved & believe, not just preach it off stage cuz it’s trendy. us... we don’t preach any holy message. GRUFF, Maryland, US _ the times#9 1996 Q:any last jokes? 3 A: Jesus & Moses come down from heaven & moses goes: ,, hey lesse if i can still part water!“. so he walks up & WHOOUUSHH! & water parts . he then walks thru. so Jesus goes on & Boom!, falls str8 into the water. he gets up, swims to the shore & goes: ,.moses, why doesn’t it work anymore?“ so moses goes: 1 don’t know, Jesus, maybe it’s the holes in your feet?“ ACHEBORN, Darmstadt, Gmny the times#10_1996 Q: does the name ACHEBORN have anything to do with anti-church motives, cuz on stage you had this cross with Jesus nailed on it with your name on top? A: i'm bom catholic & i live in a small town very influenced by religion, so as a consequence it also influenced me & my life. i was confronted with christian symbols at a very early age, where i was not able to criticize what’s going on. we just like the mystical & dark symbols of the church! BATTERY, washington DC, US the times#10 1997 Q: i remember Frodus play a show in a church & talking positive about that church! A: it’s funny, the guy who had just interviewed me asked me about the tribals on our CD, if we were a religious band, and a couple of years back everyone would’ve been: NO!! cuz Brian used to be anti-religious, his mom used to be a nun for like 9 years or sth. but my attitude t’wards religion is like Graham’s: real layed back! well i guess you can tell im x-ian if you’re around me long enuff..... i don’t cuss!! okay i cuss once in a while if sth goes really wrong & i feel real crappy but normally i don’t! Q: sXe & vegetarianism BE a eaccteed to me it’s a big decision to make. i’m x-ian, so are my parents, & veg-ism isn’t part of the x-ian religion whatsoever. i’m not saying you can’t be a veg-arian x-ian, but it’s not sth you’re taught. EVERSOR, Italia the times#11 1997 Q: 1s Italy as religious as everyone makes it out to be? and what are your personnal views on it? A: it’s true Italy is a very rel. country & don’t forget we have the pope!! concerning me, i’m not religious or better i don’t follow any religious institutions. i want to be free from certain dogmas or prejudices typical of many of them. i don’t believe in a god as a raffiguration given to us by the catholic church, but i believe in a god more alike a force or an idea. the same force that permits us to be humble, respectful with pthers & that permits us to forgive and love our fellowmen, especially those who stay worser than us. i also do not agree with this connection b’tween religion & music, especially within the HC scene. where the ideal from being free from certain tules & institutions has always been supported & i don’t think oriental religions are too much diffrent from ours. anyway i don’t wanna accuse anyone of being religious, me & Marco live in a religious family & i think that the problem of the faith is a serious & delicate question that everyone must try to answer with his head & heart. HOTWATERMUSIC, gainesville FL, us the times#11 97 Q: talking about religion, what do you think of it in & outside the scene? A: religion, man, that’s very personnal. i’m not sure if it has anything to do with the music scene. someone’s spirituality shouldn’t be tampered with by a group’s idealism- no matter how right it might be. it might be a part of certain punx’ lives but i don’t think it’s the scene’s problem, everyone needs the room to believe in what they want. oneEY EKopen, wellesley MA, us the times#11 97 Q:your views on religion: A: hi, i'm Marco & these beliefs are basicly my own. i’m an agnostic. i don’t believe we can ever know what's out there. the rest of the guys probably just don’t care about religion either. way i believe Tim O was raised believing RALPH MACHIO was our saviour. i’m not too sure where he stands now. in regards to the scen, if that works for the bands & they're keeping it real cool, let em do it. for those doing it as a gimmick, you better be as good as STRYPER & rock the world for the one who is the rock!! NECROSIS, Istanbul, Turkiye the times#11 97 Q: ....quickly, religion? A: everyone should be free in their beliefs, no one should have the right to tell others how to lead theor lives & what to believe in. religion’s always used to exploit people. RADICAL NOISE, Istanbul Turkiye the times#11 97 Q: fundamentalism is on the rise in Turkey, a primarily secular country, how do you feel about this & religion as a whole? A: that’s a broad question....i definetly don’t believe in religion but i’m not against those who do. it’s all about personnal treedom. we certainly don’t need 1000 years old books to tell us how to live. my own imagination & personnality are my own gods. im only responsible for myself. when it cums to Turkey, the Islamists are dumb ass fundies that use the poor & badly educated to win quotes. ... Q: what about in HC? do you pray 5 times a day? To be honest I’d never seen an interview with them, the lack of interest in good bands is mind boggling these days!!. So I thought a short informative interview was needed to spread the word about these lovely chaps, nothing more nothing less. The bass playerkyle answered the questions. Cheers!! ~ fA SO How and When did BUGLITE come about? Well we formed in January 1994 I thinK!! We kind of got togethor as a joke because all that was around us were angry hardcore bands bithching about living in the suburbs, so we said fuck it lets try to be original and it worked. Give Us a quick run down of releases you’ ve had up till now. Well they go like this: ,, This Day“ 7inch ,,Marcia Brady“ 7inch, ,,Bouncing Souls“ split 7inch, ,,Dustbunny split 7inch, ,,Sorry to disappoint you“ 7inch, ,,Love and Other sorrows“CD, ,,Sidecar* split 7inch, and about 20 comps. You also run your own label right? Yeah I do Matthau records!! How did that come about? Well I’m a complete control freak when it comes to our releases so when our Onefoot records deal came up we finally had the money to do it ourselves and we did. Are you mainly using that for BUGLITE releases or for other bands that you like? The label started out just doing our stuff, but now ist going beyond that. I’m working on a bunch of stuff for other bands as we speak! Whats the fascination with Walter Matthau all about? Your favourite Matthau movie? I just like him. I think hes one of the best actors I’ve ever seen and just his appearence and to think someone that freaking ugly could be so famous gives me hope! I Can’t really name a favourite, if you asked my 20 gave movies they would all involve Walter. oa ae Religion? OK! Music now, give us an insight to reactions at shows are local shows different to those of ones on tour? Usually we get a really good response, when there are | don’t believe in organised religion in any scene. I think ? you should set your own rules for living not having them , actually people there. I think it’s a lot better on tour though, cause it’s all new to those people, but around gale, impressed upon you! Straightedge? here people have seen us like every weekend for three years so it’s kind of hard to keep peoples interest. The straightedge thing is cool. I’m not myself but I have the utmost respect for those who choose to live that way. j L\k PP Interesting hobbies or jobs? I would’nt call the collecting Walter Matthau stuff a hobby, it’s more of an infliction. And my job is the band p and label. Dave our singer collects dead animal carcasses for some odd reason. I think he analyses them to help out his drawing or something. 710, ew Future Plans? 3 to record a new album, so look Future Plans: Well we leave next wee r atwo month US new stuff. “s So whats the local scene actually like? any bands €.., mentioning? (it'll be out by time you cead this?!) —by DPHNY Craneh was formed in the winter of 95. Tolga (T.)& the drummer Orkun(O.) have been playing since 91 in a band called VIOLENT POP (stop & go HC) between 1991-92. In September T. joined TURMOIL as a bass player, & in the winter of 93 O. joined in as well. After their last release (Turmoil/AccousticGrinder splitep) the band split up & T&O formed a band called Regorge with Enis(E.), who now plays bass in Craneh . They played something like early BlackFlag & early AOF. Cruneh was our next band, at first without E.. our other bassist left us after the oct96 gig with MasticScum(fm Austria). So E. joined in again. Other band projects of this trio included KurbaaKermit, Muttec, 31ers, CocaCola is my god etc... Craneh are Enis-bass, Orkun-drums, Tolga-guitar/vox(who answered all these stoopid questions! Tell us a little about the Turkish HC scene, bands & their motivations. I don’t believe that there IS A REAL HC scene in Turkey. There are no HC (or punk) bands outside the big ciries like Istanbul or Ankara. This has 2 reasons: 1. HC is geographically so close to Turkey ( f.e. Greece & Bulgaria have lotsa HC bands & zines), but on the other hand it’s too far to Turkey about culture & musical content. 2. Income rate of Turkey. Not only music, doing anything in art is expensive & limited here, f.e. there are no free places for HC bands to play shows. Only long haired idiots have the chance to play gigs in rock bars. & there only are rock clubs to play gigs at. You have to bring your own drumkit, amps & sound equipment, if you have all that! ! Not one of the HC bands have their own drumkit, or amps. Because of this we can only play/watch 10 HC/punk shows at the most in one year!! In countries with low income in int. standarts (like Turkey) Art can’t grow up. Most people playing HC in Turkey usually come from good income families(the majority of them). These people, who have no economic probs, can t know/understand the difficulties of the working class 6 common people. We can show understanding to their deficients about this subject matter, but when they say ,,we’re a polit. band“ it is a big lie! Their polit. thoughts are only a trend. I ‘ve never seen a Turkish HC band write about the war in Kurdistan, or political events, human rights etc.. they write about abstract polit. topics like ,,Fascism is a bad ideology-fuck it!“!!! when you ask them ,,why don’t you write about the war carried on with the Kurds?“ or about Police Terror, they will say:“you know we're living in Turley, it’s really dangerous, it is unnecessary to write about these topics!“ !!! They are essential a- politics! And the truth of the matter is lots of bands & people like these are in every part of the world. They are too many. Don’t fool away your money, time with these bands saying ,,we’re a polit. band“. It’s only a trend & a way to sell their stuff (records, zines..). if there were HC bands that write (fe) psychadelic lyrix, i'm sure most of them would write psychadelic lyrix. This is only a trend. From then on in their flyers, ad’s etc you'll probably see:“fast, powerful(etcetc..) PSYCHADELIC HC“!!! this is a ttick by saying ,,we are political, i am political!“ without having real polit. presstire & probs. You sure are a weird bunch. How can you make this type of HC, but all of y’all listen to complete diffrent things? Yes, we are a weird bunch!! Orkun mostly listens to the Cure, Neworder, DepecheMode, 80’s NewWavw 6 PostPunk bands. Enis likes Jazz, Industrial & Punk bands. I#m the only one devoted to HC, but i spent my time with listening to Turk. Kurd. Political music! The bands we are influenced by are Citizens Arrest, Born Against, 80-82’s & 88-USHC. Our music is HC, but we don’t worry about always playing HC. We’re making HC cuz it’s the only way to show our anger, hate & energy. Living in a semi-islamic country(with Islam being the main religion in Turkey), do you consider yourself Islamic Do you believe in Allah? No, definetly not! Why can i believe? I only believe in my self. I have no time for religion & god! You can believe in the Islamic god without praying 5 times a day, can’t you? Nearly 98% of the 60 million inhabitants are muslims, but i don’t know anybody of my neighborhood praying 5 times a day. So yes, you can believe in your ,,fear“! Do you consider you country Islamic? MY COUNTRY??? It’s not my country!! It’s the country of rightist, conservatives, fascists, big wigs, polices & soldiers (that can feed only with blood & dead bodies). We are ,,Traitors“, we are ,,terrorists“!! In Turkey being leftist, not believing in religion, criticizing politicians & the system is similar with being A Terrorist!! (Terrorist!Huh!Idon’t know the meaning of it?). also our citizens(my dear patriotic muslim citizens) like to denounce terrorists like you to our dear police (those who serve & protect our wealthy, strong, big, muslim country) and they like to watch your dead body, eat your corpse, gnaw on your bones.... About your question, YES, i consider ,.my country“ Islamic. At the same time Fascist, Capitalist & Terrorist!! In ' Turkey it’s natural to go to jail, & there to be tortured, killed or starved to death or get beaten to death by the police. If you want to live long & healthy in Turkey, you should be quiet, you should memorize all the national songs & you should have a big Turkish flag on your house! Explain a little about Turkey’s secular roots. Do you think that due to religious tensions Turkey could turn into another Algeria? I don’t think that Turkey will be like Algeria. Yea there are radical muslims, conservatives. They’ve got a big part of educational institutions & mayoralties, but these people never can be a threat, cuz these idiots are like paperhouses. One puff (blow) is enuff!! Turkish citizens are muslim but they are so devoted to ATATURK (Atakuh, the man who set up the Turk. Republik), so the Laicism principle ( one of his principles) will be saved by them. Closing i’d like to ask you a question: do you think that the US government supports the zines & bands for their help with spreading the Amerikkkan Imperialism? For example MRR? Shit good fucking question. I think the government doesn’t support them, even tho there once was a column in MRR talking about them being run by major labels. Knowing zines & bands from the states, i know they ain't supported by the government. And the government doesn’t see them as any threat whatsoever, so they jsut don’t care. D: AAHH!! the rumours are true!! we met in a high school music class which was like in the 9th grade and that was the section numbers of the different classes like English 101, and ours which was of course MU330! So there you have iT! Lets talk a little about the tour a little, it’s with Blanks 77 right? D: Yeah we’ve toured with the Blanks before in the states and we’ve done...well actually we’ve only played 3 shows with | them in England, those being London, Leeds and tomorrow night in Birmingham. So it’s not exactly a full fledged tour with | them. | So hows it been? D: Oh It’s been great!!! we’ve had so much fun!! it’s seriously been a blast. And It’s like your first time in Europe or England? q D: It’s our first time playing outside the US!! so yeah the first time in either Europe or England #% What were the main differences or weird shit that struck you? j D: Man there were DOGPILES last night!!! at the end of every song there were these pileups in the middle of the floor. That was kinda weird, you dont get that in the States, usually when we play someone’ll fall down and they ‘Il get picked up, here a if anyone falls... G: EVERYONE JUMPS ON THEM!!!! D: so eventually you got these HUGE dogpiles!! It was great and looked like a lot of fun so I kept jumping in and joining in. Which show was that? a < D: | think that was in southampton, the place was pretty tiny and... T: the floor was carpeted!! D: Here it’s BRICK!!( refering to the gravity club) I can’t see the kids dogpiling on the bricks here!! well thats a little too tuff .. for me anyway!! but it looks like theres a good turn out here tonite, is that what it’s usually like? ‘ : 5 E ; : { Sometimes, sometimes the turn outs low depending on the band, what about the scenes in the States? ! T: there are good scenes in most all the cities we play in and we get some pretty good turn outs in most. * : Would you say being in a Ska band helps due to the fact that that style is popular over there now? D:Well thats true to some extent , but I think that the bands that have been around for a long time are getting more and “4 more popular as word about them gets out . | dont think that applies as much to the newer bands that are around. ; Well your pretty well known here, does that surprise you? = D: Yeah thats pretty wierd! Because our albums have’nt even been available here until this month, I guess people are ff attracted to us when they see Ska or whatever on the flyer, so that seems to help. G: And I’ve noticed that word of mouth travels a lot faster here. D: Thats kind of whats happened though right? like our first show was in Brighton and all of a sudden a day later all of the Brighton people would go to London. So we keep on seeing the same faces which again is weird!! PEOPLE KEEP § FOLLOWING US ABOUT! which is great though! lees OOH!! A cult following hey??!! Re. D: AAH!! I dunno, We’re getting there!! no I dunno about that! mg Whats up with Dill Records at the moment? B. Lee has sort of jumped ship with Asian Man records has’nt he? Are you § familiar with him? D: YEAH we know Bruce Lee!! No he’s just doing Asian Man records now and in the middle of July we’re rereleasing the first 2 albums on Asian Man, and in the middle of september our brand new one will be out also on Asian man. we were FgeJ initially on Dill from just knowing Skankin Pickle and touring with them in the states. They once even stayed at our sax | T: Dill have had some bad luck over the last year or so with legal entanglements also. r. *~9 BA What was that all about? T: They had problems with using certain things for the covers of a couple of Cds like the ,,Nerds* parody cover for the One Eye Open CD. Also the cover of the Misfits of Ska comp. They ended up with some lawsuits concerning all that from the Willy Wonka candy company etc... I think the One Eye Open Cd has now been withdrawn. Any funny tour stories? D: Ummm.... Gerry can answer this one!! G: AHHH C’mon I can’t think of any ( I kinda feel like their holding s.thin back, what d’you think hey readers? -the typ) RS It’s been so funny and great all the time!! 4 GEEZ!! there you go again!! I cant believe you like it here so much Most US bands just piss and moan about being here someones obviously been putting stuff in your drinks or something!! LAUGHTER all round | G: But it’s true!! After the Leeds show I payed ten pounds for a video and we drove to Sunderland to stay at our drivers house and we found like a party , no actually 2 parties and watched some videos and had a laugh, it was unbelievable! everyone was so great! Okay I gotta finish this off. Interpol Tradition, Any last jokes? f D: Gerrys full of jokes, whats that lymmeric you learnt? 3 G: Yeah!! I learnt something!! Okay here we go: I’m not a pheasent plucker i’m a pheasent pluckers mate I’m only j plucking pheasents coz a pheasant pluckers late! your supposed to say it seven times after 3 pints or something. Thanx! picsaat: EA WNZ4330 clo Asian Wan Feox 35585 Yijonte Sereno, CA 95030-5585 ASA Ever wonder what happened to that amazing band from Canada called 1 SPY? Well we did! So the Interpol decided to send some questions to the old Bassist Todd. If you never aqcuianted yourself with I SPY heres your’ chance, or if your just curious read on...... So How About a brief history of the band, who, when and why? Hey there Interpol! Heres a short history of I SPY. We started in Regina and were a band for a few years then we moved to Winnipeg. We have been broken up for nearly a year now. We were Dave, Rary, Juicepig, the Rod. Dave is now finishing up university. Rary is doing some type of computer shit. Juicepig works at the co-op daycare and is very serious into capocira(Brazilian martial arts). 1 the Rod play bass for Propaghandi and guitar for Swallowing Shit. and am into Shaolin Kung Fu and Ji JITSU. Good shit!!We love that stuff! Thats what me and juicepig do togethor all the time now, thats why I mentioned it I guess. Since I SpY is no more. Over The years I ‘ve heard so much about your shows, was there really that much to tell? Our shows really went up and down we always had to borrow equipment so a lot of times we’d have to use terrible stuff or stuff that was’nt suited to our sound, that ruined a lot of shows. Some shows we’re great though! Alot of them were really unique shows. We tried to keep them interesting but sometimes it would just flop. Sometimes it would be great and the crowd would love it and go totally mad! other times they'd just stand there pitying the fact that we are stupid individuals. I SPY seemed to be a band that covered nearly all the important issues of today I can think of. What do you think of bands that are’nt as socially or politically outspoken? Does it matter? I listen to a lot of bands that are’nt politically outspoken. Music does’nt have to be . The stuff going on around me is what gives me my drive. It might not be so for others but thats okay! What about the drive“ for a song like .God Family Country“ is that just personal inspirations???!! my inspiration for that song is just looking around or talking to people like my dad, who blames all the wrong people for their problems. It’s very common to do that in North America. Plus I HATE religion, so I mixed these two things into a neat little scrotum! Since we’re on the subject of lyrics who wrote most of them? I wrtote most of the lyrics, the juicepig wrote some as well. “™~ There was a certain degree of good humour in some of the lyrics, Do you feel that looking around at the present HC scene most have lost their sense of humour, especially ‘When it comes to what s acceptable to say and write | within lyrics? | | Yes, I t’s lost it’s humour, the only people who are Cieyingt to be funny are those Epitaph bands. I wish more bands could do good funny but smart lyrics. As opposed to ,,trying“ to be funny with shitty jokes. Do you think it’s got something to do with the new PC ' trend? I don’t know if it has to do with the extreme PC people, | who cares eh? I guess if I want good humour I'll just talk ‘to the juicepig. | The Canadian Scene, bands? hmmm...theres good bands and bad bands. Good ones are MORAL PANIC (from our old home town, best band in Canada!) SUBMISSION HOLD, uh... yeah some people are really nice some are just idiots. What about Canada as a whole? What are your thoughts on the .,seperation of Quebec“ are you glad it did’nt happen? I’m glad it did’nt happen, I guess. i live very very far from there so don’t know what it’s like to live there. I would hate to see it turn into something like Croatia or something. I don’t know. Canada has obviously got to look in the French peoples demands and needs. You said earlier that you hated religion, seeing as this is the religious issue of Interpol, do you want to briefly expand on that? Yeah religion sucks. Religion anywhere is dumb. It’s just an easy way out of not knowing the answers. MAKE ONE UP!! If god existed we would have to destroy him. Fucking dick! Okay on _a lighter note, If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be? - ] would like to be a handsome man. Any chance of coming to the UK soon? With Propagandhi, we’d love to go to the UK. Lasts words of advice, comments or jokes? Jokes? how about my life. INTERVIEWS “RANCOUR” AND “NAILED” A vast country at the end of the world, its beauty overwhelmingly impressing, with people “down to earth” of enormous friendliness and gratitude, inhabited by countless widely different cultures. This is South Africa. Many different worlds in one country. Most people of our generation still associate South Africa with its very particular, historical past. For several years now the “Rainbow Nation” follows the path of democracy. The historical process it went through is more or less unique. But the transformation to become a mature democracy is still not finished yet. The former political regime did its best to keep people out of political matters and tried to avoid an education providing people with a healthy, political self-conciousness. Many people still don’t acknowledge their actual role as an individual in a democratic system, either because they so far haven’t had the opportunity to do so, or they simply haven’t been taught a way of thinking critically towards structures and subtle influences in their social and political environment surrounding them. Considering this particular situation today it seems interesting to take a look at emerging alternative youth cultures in South Africa, with punkrock and hardcore as flagship representing the rebirth of political conciousness in a new-born democracy, its existence dangerously stretched to the bursting point by difficult cultural conditions and society’s tendency to split into various extremes. South Africa’s problem today is not racism anymore, but the fact that people in most cases don’t know how to deal with their newly found political responsability for themselves and their social environment. I was talking to members of two different local bands in Cape Town, South Africa, on the 19th of april,1997 at the “Riverclub” in Observatory, in the southern suburbs. RANCOUR, the first band interviewed caught my attention because of their ultimate political old-school hardcore. Their frontman, Mark Silberstein, overwhelms his audience with his ice-cold political message and always manages to leave people standing dumb-founded of their own stupidness, totally not prepared to take that kind of stuff. Mark tries drawing people’s attention to certain subjects. Merciless and real punkrock, he doesn’t give a fuck if people are interested or not. The second band I first saw on a private gig at someone’s house in Bloubergstrand, in the northern suburbs Cape Towns. It was a atmospheric night on new years eve 1996/97 when NAILED suddenly showed up on the stage that wasn’t even one and just rocked the whole fuckin’ house with their extremely powerful mixture of speedy funpunk and exploding moshcore. Their charismatic frontman, Emile Lombard, wrapped himself up in a chain of electrical christmas tree lights and almost killed himself receiving electrical shocks after his body had become sweaty within several minutes. On that particular occasion all the band members rather looked like actors from “spaceballs” than punkrockers, having dressed themselves up like weirdos from hell. However, they insist upon being considered as a christian band. Just listen, what they have to tell you ! ints by PHIL Px by PHPL PHIL: Okay Mark, first of all, please list the names of all the band members. MARK: Bandmembers are myself, Mark Silberstein, Greg Atkins - bass, Jef Jones, which is really his name, as guitarist and a new member who plays for this other Punkband, SUBVERT SOCIETY, which is on the other side of our tape, is Gregor Boettcher, the German dude, as percussionist PHIL: When did you first start ? MARK: Okay, we started in 1996, I think we’ve been together for six months now. PHIL: How did you guys get into Punkrock ? I just wonder because there actually isn’t a decent punkrock movement in Cape Town at all 772 MARK: Do you mean individually or as a band, how we got together as a band, in that way ? PHIL: Both ways. MARK: Speaking for myself, in primary school I had fascination with the DEAD KENNEDYS and what I’ve seen of them, but I haven’t heard much, because this is Cape Town, after all. I saw their symbol et cetera, I somehow got into skaterock and by standard six, in high school, I basically heard DEAD KENNEDYS for the first time and a lot more punk. It’s just the way people were themselves, and this whole thing about the whole punk scene which appealed to me a lot since then I got more and more into punk and I went more and more to punk gigs if there ever were any. And the chance came for me for being in a band and I was in it, so....... PHIL: Were the DEAD KENNEDYS the only band you had as an inspiration ? MARK: Oh, no ne (laughs). At that stage SKX VISLOLS, alicriaitve, foiky and punky new ape siefl which was how t all started. aiid then We caine to oie, Vou now, to stuff hke CRASS and so on. PIL: iow did you guys ting each other / MAR: I went up to these guys, with Greg, our bassist and Tistin, fhe skaier dinie you know, they were aboui to stati a batid, aud they didi’ i have a nate vel, and T went up to them and | said. you know. that 1 was very keen on singing. especially political and expressive stuff, you Know, positive messages, and I said to them, hey if you are nieresied ima vacshisi Td reaily hike te sing, so they sard foie fine and they had the choice between Miguel that other dude. aiid mic. so they chose me. after having plaved ene song euch. Ha Ha Ha (laughs). So they chose me and | was totally up to if. kor me, it's like a part of my destiny te sing in a punk band, you know, the expression, the way | foot Treatly want fo pei ii out you know, 1@s something 7 always wanted to do. But after a while we noticed that our band was a little bit messed up after we had to exchange some members and we decided to break up, because we saw that it wouldn’t get us anywhere. That broke up and Greg and I started from a scratch and founded RANCOUR, and we met Jeff in the college, and that’s how we formed. From nothing we’ve come to where we‘re now. PHIL: How would you try to ibe your musi le? MARK: AEEHMM, it’s definetely old-school punk and it’s very political, because that’s the way I feel. PHIL: You reminded me of MINOR THREAT !!! MARK: Sorry, ... ohh, thank you, that’s a real compliment (laughs). That’s a good one. Well, then I suppose if we remind people of MINOR THREAT then we only add a tinge of skaterock and stuff to it. ; This is a great honour. Thank you very much. MINOR THREAT is by the way another band which I really like, and everything with Ian Mc Kaye. S. What do you and what don’t you like about what’s ing here in South Africa’s local 2? MARK: I think the music scene is dead. [ll tell you that, D-E-A-D, put in big letters. But recently, there has been more punk bands coming up, people like for example SUBVERT SOCIETY, who are usually much younger than we are, but they play old- school, they have a positive message and it’s great to see, you know, it gives you hope, it gives you faith in the scene in future, and I think it’s slowly coming up, but I only hope that it’s not becoming a fashion statement, when punk is coming up here again. PHIL: Some kind of fashion statement like it has become overseas, in the sta Europe, is that what you ; MARK: Yes, like it is overseas night now. I just hope we can keep it met because that’s it where we wanna keep it, while there’s a lot of local bands here like “Fungy Gone West”, who are basically into their stuff because of money, the image and fame, you know. Bands like us, SUBVERT SOCIETY and DIMINISHED RETURN are basically into that music because of the messages, and we want to keep it that way as far as possible. PHIL: What do you go off about in your songs ? MARK: Well, our messages are basically about positiveness, and, achmm...., ’'m trying to get a brotherhood but this is Cape Town, it’s pretty slag. I'd like to see some kind of MINOR THREAT action, Ian Mc Kaye, you know that energy and that unity, which is a big word. I’m really into this unity. It’s united scene, united people and a common goal. Positive thinking just to , you know, to feel that they can change, that they can make a difference. That’s important, you know. And that everybody can make a difference, you know, not just one person. There’s more people like you, everywhere. PHIL: So that’s basically what you want to change in future, is this more or less your vision ? MARK: Yaah, that is my vision, I wanna basically have a brotherhood where people are havin’ fun and where people are going off on uit, you know, I don’t want them to see back and say “great band”, they should actually show their energy ! P. Cape To MARK: Basically, a that’s about it. Right. PHIL: There’s no strai e either in Cape Town. Most le have never ever about such a thi fore. On the one hand I noticed ren and alcohol abuse here, on the other hand there are a lot le heavily into religion and _It’s like ev ing is split up into these e€ es. Why is that ? MARK: To that question I say two things: peer pressure and society. Peer pressure has to do with the drugs, I would say. People are desperately trying for a way out and are not able to deal with reality, not able to find an easier way, an alternative to deal with the problem. They won’t solve their problem by using these drugs. There’s no escape from reality because once you stop from drugs you get back to reality. You must stay in reality and deal with a problem, not rely on a substance. Religion should be people’s choice, it mustn’t be forced on anybody. I think if free people feel free to follow a religion and if it makes them a whole person, that’s great. But nobody should be forced, you know. You get a lot of parents who are very involved in their religion and they force it upon their children, you know, they force it. And the children often don’t know any other way out of what they’ ve been taught, they just swallow it. Freedom from religion. Freedom for religion. Freedom for everything. You choose what you want to do. Anything that’s forced from anybobody simply can’t make you happy ! You would agree with that, totally. PHIL: Are you planning to go on a tour overseas ? MARK: Yees, Pll definitely do that. The hopes and inspirations we have are very limited in Cape Town, and I feel that overseas it will be more appreciated, because people actually know how to express that energy ,anger and all that rage. And, I mean, I’ve spoken to you about going to Europe and hopefully next year some time we’ll be able to do that. Admodn PHIL: Is that what you actually expect from the overseas” scene when you go there ? MARK: I do, I really do. From what I’ve seen, what I’ve heard, people actually go off, they know how to express themselves, while people are shy over here and they’re mostly hippies. PHIL: Do you agree if I say people here have got no political consciousness ? MARK: Yaah, ...completly. 1 mean, I find it very hard to communicate with a lot of people. My band and I, we now about where we are. People havin’ political discussions and the lyrics they write are all up to the way they’re thinking, but for other people you have to literally spit it out and then they’re often like, you know, “oohhh, why can’t you just leave it alone”. You know the slag way of saying that. But if you think about it, that’s what punk is al! about, if you think like that, express the way you feel and don’t let anyone stop you from doing it. It’s not about backing down. PHIL: I agree with that. What do you wanna say to people elsewhere on the world ? MARK: ...aeehmmm, I hope that you give us a good reception wind. Things are not always what they seem in this country, you ; can’t slag off everybody. If anybody has got any political convictions about this country, about the white people who are in South Africa, about the youth, is that a lot of us were simply too young to do anything about it. I personally and my family, we’ve fought against the fascist regime in South Africa to make it a ....what it is now, which is not much better you must admit because we’re going to bloody banana republic, so I mean you’ ve got the choice of fascism and communism, but at least in this way we’ve got more freedom and we’re not a fascist country anymore, thank god ! PHIL: Would you eciate if le came over here and checked it out ? MARK: OOHH, definctly. I want all people to come, I want people to see. I don’t want people to be ignorant, you know. You can’t talk about a country or a place if you haven’t been there. A lot of people make assumptions towards what it would be like and that everybody was a racist, but it wasn’t like that ! Everywhere you had resistance here, you had people who defied it. Be they white, be they black, be they whatever colour, they defied it. And that was everywhere. PHIL: Have you got last any shout outs, thank yous or fuck yous ? MARK: (laughs) aeehmmm, basically I just want to say, achm.. I suppose, be true to yourself and your feelings and always follow your beliefs. If you’re going to dic anyway, you mustn't dic fighting for what you belicve and that’s an important thing, and never back down, because if you backed down once it’s so easy to be kept down. Always stand for what you believe. I. suppose I would just like to thank bands like MINOR THREAT and the DEAD KENNEDYS for being, ....and CRASS, for being a big influence in my life, yeah, inspiration in my life and for making me want to get that energy. They taught me a lot in expression and they gave me something to walk towards, because I see them and I hear them and, you know, and I think this is the way it should be like. This is what it can be like. And eahmm....I suppose that’s it ! Food for thought: |o Oak};ee Rd ; “He insulted me, he hurt me, he defeated me, he robbed me. SIGGI: Emile Lombard-Vocals and Guitar from time to time, Sygmund Brodalka-Guitar, Donovan Overton-bass, Francois de Lange-percussion. PHIL: When did you start ? SIGGI: About oktober 1994. It started off as a joke really, and then me and Stephan, we started the band. It was just like a joke and then we really became serious. In the end it was just me and Francois who ended up and started off as a proper band after some changes. PHIL: How did you guys get into punkrock basically, considering the fact that there’s no scene in Cape Town ? SIGGI: Obviously some American influences. I listened to punk from the states a lot. I don’t know, I’m just a very bouncy person and | ended up playing fast music. Punk is nice is nice in thal genre. It’s a happy music. Okay, I tell you why: In Cape Town there’s always these somber death metal bands and stuff, it’s a big scene, hippiccrap. here’s no fast and positive stuff, so we decided no, we gonna do something different. But | always enjoyed old-school stull as well, from London and so. PIL: Do you like SNUIT' then ? SIGGI: SNUFF ? Yeah, 10s mee. Is the old stull. PUL: Llow would you describe your musical style ? SIGGI: Well, let's say hardcore-punk. A crossover. New school punk, you know the Californian style, with a tinge of hardcore. PIIL: Lave you been to the states already ? SIGGI: No, I would like to go there. PHIL: ‘lry to give us an impression of Cape ‘Town's music scene SIGGI: What | don’t like is that it’s very unprofessional. It’s like: If it happens it happens, if it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen. There’s no stickabiltty. People start a band and stop, they start a band and stop. There’s no really vision, if you can call if like that, to reach somewhere. PUL: ‘That's a problem of mentality ! SIGG Yes, 1s a mentality problem. For years we were like stuck in this little whole, nobody helped us and we had to do all our recordings ourselves, and only now it’s changing, We're getting proper studios and — stuff. I'verything’s going boom now. And everybody's going “Uhh, South Alricans can also make music. Now it’s gonna be a lot better. at Ree aud you're definitly imiciested to go on a tour Overseas |? SIGGL Yes. And I wanna especially go to germany. Germany because of this new nazi-thing. Obviously it’s not the biggest thing but that’s the first thing that drew me. And, another thing is that my dad is Polish, night, he is 76 now, second world war, you know, so I suppose 1 was meant to hate Germans, but T thought no. Pll just lov’em. ‘that’s actually why, you know, that whole war thing, it’s tke reconcihate =. countnes or something. well. Why ? SIGGI: Aehhmm, ....(to himself) why is there a lot ?..... Maybe, South Africa is very conservative. If non-christan bands make music, that’s all nght, but when christians start making music they get like ban from the church, and everone is like “how can you do this”. But they’re changing. There’s actually a lot of bands coming up now. But there’s only like three or four like pioncering stuff, so it’s picking up more and more now. PHIL: You know, I wondered about _punkrock is actually something. that opposes bourgeois or average citizen’ s values. And you guys are so much into christianity. I think I don’t really know any other bands overseas who follow that path. SIGGI: Yeah, what must I say ? PHIL: Now you must defend your point of view. SIGGI: Okay, the thing is, anarchy is against this governmental stuff and so we are anarchists in a way as well, ‘cause we’re standing for ets cancttcatis for Jesus and ...... yah (he pauses and thinks)...... i subtic and cmotional and you can’t find any words for it ! SIGGT: (laughs in a Shy way)...okay, I don’t know how to explain, ......we’re a christian band . We’re different to the average, and punk and so is different to it as well. We're not anti-government as such but we are anti-satan, if you can call that (he Eauigits). We’ re anti- something iiss SIGGI. Yaahh. That’s obviously a highly positive message. PHIL: What else do you wanna say about you message ? SIGGI: What else ? We don’t force it out people’s throats(no, not at all!! —the ironic ed), they’re used to only what they’re hearing and then we come around and say “Jesus loves you” or whatever, and then they’re like bombed or something. Actually some people do then realize that they need this thing. Some people drink or do drugs or anything so they realize there’s help from this type of thing. You know what I’m saying. We’rc offering help, we're not forcing anything on people. We're just who we are, and then people come and usually speak to us, we don’t say anything. We do have a vision, more or less, but people usually come to us, why are we doug this and that, or “Pve got this problem, can you help me 27”. So we're just another band there, singing what we’re believin’ in. (and still on the inner sleeve of their tapes they consider themselves as ministers and the whole thing as a ministry, now where’s that not pushing their fuckin’ beliefs down our throats'?—the angry ed) PHIL: Have you ever thought about the fact that there obviously i extremes the leidcor-diupheads and the faithfit Jesus-foliowers 7 SIGGI: Yeah, it’s definitcly like that. It’s actually growing more and morc like that. It’s starting to become a lot like in Londoii, where there’s no more middle-road, or grey area, if you can call it, it’s all black or white. All people are really into religion (christianity), or they drink and they simply go on as they do. Se it’s black or white. People can’t stay moderate, they have to fall left or right, they feel forced to choose. I don’t know. People in school with me, they used to be that kind of study-hard people, wouldn’t do anything wrong, now they’re all alcoholics or then some of them are christians. So they fall to the sides.( if it’d be up to me 1d rather be an alcoholic than a new-born Jesus-freak—the ed). PHIL: What about alternatives like the Straight Edge scene ? SIGGTE Ya, Ya , Pvcheard about Ian Mc Kaye and his.... cross-X-thingy. We heard about that. Shelter is also in that genre, isn’t it? / of South Africa’s youth to into two WANLED — PHIL: .....more or less... SIGGI: I’ve never actually heard them, I'd like to do that. Okay, straight edge and christianity are actually very similar to each other(BOLLOX!!!!!!—the ed.) It’s just that straight edgers believe in themselves, don’t do this wrong, don’t do that......, we just put our trust in god. That’s all. That’s the actual difference. You could describe it as a straight edge thing as well, somehow you know. PHIL: Tell me s ing about future visions, what do you wanna change ? SIGGI: Future visions. Well aehmm, overseas, we'd like to go on a tour through Europe, because the states are packed with bands already, eee on the christian market. P . ~ S EPR of SIGGE Christian market. me christian bands. ‘There’s like thousands of christian bands already. So there’s no use for us to go there as well to try it. Europe has got very few. 1 don’t know if you’ve ever heard of christian bands in Europe ? SIGGL ....so that’s why we wanna go there. And that’s our actual vision. And we wanna progress, get better and better. Perhaps we actually wanna get signed some time. PHIL: Is that basically what you you expect from overseas’ scene ? SIGGT: Yah, you know, you’re not gonna get really far if you haven’t got a strong back-up. Especially in America they’ve got nice support. ‘They back up the bands really good. Unlike here, you know. PHIL: What else do you wanna say to people overseas '? SIGGE Well, ...in what sense...... _ of SIGGI Achhh.. .(laughs).... what do I wanna say ? I don’t know. I’m sorry......okay, for one thing, everyhing’s not black, there’s white people around, and there’re no lions in the streets. And racism 1s dead ! It’s actually reversed a bit, but far not that badly, of course...South Africa....is a nice place (laughs). PHIL: Okay, have you got any last shout outs , thank yous or fuck yous ? SIGGI: Thank yous, I'd say definetely thank yous ! (laughs) ...well, thanks for interviewing us. ....what else ? Yes, actually 'd like to thank the Lord for giving us the talent to do this. Thanks to people for supporting us and understanding what we’re standing for and not jumping on us and stuff. ‘Thanks for respecting us for what we’re doing ! PHIL: Do you hope to be able to go on a tour through Europe ? SIGGI: Yees, we are definetely going, trust me (laughs) ! PHIL: See you there. Mark from RANCOUR and Siggi from NAILED to the question wether they want to go on a tour together: MARK: Yahh, definetely. I think it’s nice to have two extremes of a music. You know, RANCOUR more old-school and political and NAILEI being new-school and energetic in their way, you know. SIGGI: Yes, that’d be great ! MARK: Can I just say one more thing as well ? ...Our scene is so small and it would be great because we had different variations of our scenc. More old-school and more new-school, it’s = together. Punk together united ! RK @ own “Ped MARK: Yah, definetely. SIGGL What I can say is this: As we said you don’t force stuff from people just as much as I don’t do. So, that’s why we can play together. It’s not a big thing. We’re just believin’ what we do and sing of it and they do what they do. We can do everything together, I don’t mind. Actually it’d be rad. PLIIL: Thank you guys. Siggi's comment on Mark after the interview : SIGGI. Okay, I just wanna say this. Mark from RANCOUR must get an award for being the best frontman. I don’t know if you’d find fs better. He talks a lot of rubbish....... (Mark — Saad MARK: Is that a compliment ? SIGGI No, I’m just saying. You’re the best frontman I’ve seen around because you feel a stuff for people, you just ty what you wanna say and they look at you like this and ...oohh... (everybody laughs). NAILED 78 Sanford St Bellville, 7530 Cape Town, South Africa PAINTED THIN AND ME »Louis, | think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship...“ (Humphrey Bogart to Claude Rains at the end of , Casablanca‘) So, ladies and gentlemen, now I’m going to tell you a story of four guys from Canada and a boy from Cologne, Germoney. It’s a story about fun, punkrock and friendship. Sounds pathetic, ey? Well, | Think you're right, but since | cannot tell this story in the fanzine I’m usually writing for, which is BLURR, | thought it would be interesting to read this story in another fanzine. It’s sort of like a tour diary, but then again at the same time, it isn’t. But read for yourselves... It all started in Brdhl, where PAINTED THIN were to play the local JUZ alongside with Dusseldorf’s finest FREE YOURSELF. It was one of the concerts you got to, because nothing else is on at the evening. It was nice, but not the smash-hit. Two days later PAINTED THIN played at Neuss’ Geschwister-Scholl-Haus, this time supported by ,Cermany’s SAMIAM* 11 TOES. This show was very similar to the previous one, but this time | had someone to tell me what the guys were like. Carsten, head of the worldfamous BLURR-Empire with ist fight against the unbelievably baaaaaad in the universe, had only good things to tell about the Painties. And this time the concert seemed to be more interesting. Probably because some of the songs sounded more familiar because | heard them before. Well, PAINTED THIN should play one more show in the Rhineland-Area in Bonn and | kept looking forward to that show. Maybe there would be a chance to talk to the guys... On May 31*, a concert was scheduled at Cologne’s Between. RADIOBAGHDAD and LATEX GENERATION wer the bands and | was very suprised to see that - once again - PAINTED THIN also played that evening. And on this evening the show even got better than at Neuss. And | got the chance to talk to Stephen, the guitarist. Only for a few minutes, but it was a nice start. | told him that | would be at Bonn two days later and we agreed to meet there again. When | entered the train to Bonn | wondered if Stephen would recognize me. These guys were on tour now for almost a month and they probably met many people that talked to them. But when | stood in front of Bonn’s Bla-Club and Stephen came out, he greeted me with: “Hi Jan, how are you? I'll be with you in a second.“ Hey, that guy even remembered my name. Then we had a conversation for about two hours, avery interesting one. And when | wanted to pay my entrance, Stephen put me on the guest-list, because I’ve been ,to three of our shows and we can’t take any more money from him“. Gee, that was so embarressing. Anyway, the show was great, | finally had enough money to buy their records, and we agreed that | should try to get to PAINTED THIN’s last show at Bremen, where a BLURR- organized Sk8-contest was to trake place and Carsten offered me a place in his car to get there. But | didn’t have to wait that long. The Painties told me that they would play a festival at Wiesbaden which should cost about 30.- DM and that they wanted to try to get in as many people for free as possible. TERRORGRUPPE and LAGWAGON were to play there, too. So me and my friend André went to Wiesbaden on June 21° and had the fun- time of our lives. PAINTED THIN were there and they were accompanied by Carsten and his girlfriend Claudia from Hannover. They did the driver’s job for the Painties for a few days and told us the funny stories of the tour-life. PAINTED THIN played a solid gig, but the room was to big to get some atmosphere. When LAGWAGON played, it looked more like a boygroup-concert. One teenage- grri jumped on the stage and kissed the singer. Strange... When it was getting late, we took to the room with the sleeping-places, which was on the area where the concert took place (a huge old factory-building). While we, Carsten, Claudia, Mike (PAINTED THIN- Tourguy), Paul (PAINTED THIN bass/vox), Stephen, André and me were joking around, Dan (PAINTED THIN drums) came in and told us cores Fisch saat i mio something about a bottle of whisky standing very lonely on a table. And because we are a bunch of lousy thieves we told him to swipe it. So he came back with a bottle of ,Jim Beam* and only a few minutes later we heard the reaction from outside: »WHICH MOTHERFUCKING ASSHOLE STOLE THAT FUCKING BOTTLE OF WHISKY! BITCH!!!" Uh-oh, sounds like trouble, ey? The LAGWAGON- guys were going crazy. So we hid the whisky and all the other stuff the Painties swiped during the day, and soon after everything was in ist place, the LAGWAGON-guitarist entered the room and glanced around suspiciously. Wooh, that was fun. When it came to say good-bye again, | was happy to say that | would definetly come to Bremen to see their last show in Germoney. But it even got better. | got to be on tour for the last two days of the german PAINTED THIN-tour! Oh yeah! The support would be in FREE YOURSELF’s hands, so | was able to see two very good bands.. | met up with Petrik uit ae Re ate aia Milto, FREE YOURSELF’s guitarist, and we left for Minden. There we met PAINTED THIN and - suprise - Claudia. She was asked to do the food for the evening and because she was on tour with the Painties before she was all for it. It was a very good show, the best | saw. | even got to see Mike’s acoustic set. Fabulous! A great performer. You wouldn't think that if you see Mike off-stage. He’s a really friendly and shy guy but on stage he seems to explode and live up. His music is a bit like acoustic versions of JAWBREAKER songs. Get the tape through BLURR Rec. When the Painties played their last songs, Dan through a drum stick at Claudia (it’s all about joking around, you know?) because she was making fun of him all the time. But when she threw it back, she hit him right under his eye. | think. What Stephen said to Dan after the show sums it up best: , It’s a strange coincidence that the person that hit you, was the one, who wanted to hurt you the least.“ Dan looked horrible. But because he was so drunk he didn’t realize what had happened to him. The next morning | had a very interesting conversation with Stephen. And all of our talks had one thing in common. We talked about everything but not about punkrock. And that’s how it should be. Anyway, we took off to Bremen at noon (the Painties in their van with their driver Ingo GOAR and me and Milto in the car of Milto’s parents). The weather looked very good and promised a fine day for a Sk8-Contest. And, oh yeah, what a contest this should be. A really cool sk8-park in the city of Bremen with a pool, a snakerun and plenty of space to have fun. They even had a car to jump over! It was a great contest with lots of fun, spectacular tricks and absolutely no rivalry between the contestants. Everybody who is into sk8boarding would have loved it. The show had a bit of a melancholy feeling, because it was the last time | should see PAINTED THIN play in Germoney. But there was fun the whole night through. It ended when Milto and me finally decided to go to sleep at 4:30 a.m. in the morning. wacrOutg mermarmini So as Ree [BANDE ARE The next day, everybody met at Ole’s house to have breakfast. Then we had to Say good-bye to the Painties, but before that, Stephen presented me with a bottle of Vodka, which they had swiped at Wiesbaden (lucky me, | got a bottle of LAGWAGON-Backstage-Vodka. | think | should sell it to some Teenie!). And so ends the story of PAINTED THIN and me. But, for my part, | hope this is an endless story, ‘cause | really made friends with these guys. They are so nice and I’m really happy I've met them. They made me feel the spirit of true punk. And I’m happy to have experienced it... Po —oe It wasn't a hard decision to attend this one instead of visiting the yearly event of 'R(h)einkultur’. Rheinkultur offered only two interesting bands, which both are known to me. Thus i found myself and a few friends on the Autobahn to Kassel at an absolutly indiscussable time (13:00). After painstakingly standing through several traffic jams we arrived at 16:30 in Immenhausen. There we first encountered the Lost and Found Summer i collection worn by a few boys too young to shave. Irritated by our approach they said nothing to our n *; questions of where and who to ask about the promised camping-site but pointed a finger into the direction of 4 Dp « the Akku. Taking this as a sign of good fortune i wandered into the realms of HC. There it was, the concert place and our center of life for the next two days. Directly next to the entrance by stood a tent with the inevitable merchandise and record sellers, already crowded by dozens of kids. To my boldly spoken questions, if somebody had seen Hoffi, the host, or if someone could show me the camping & ground, finally one fine young man answered my demand. As he started to explain he was interrupted by a ‘waa guy who said: ,You have to speak english to him, else he will not understand.“ How comes? Soon enough i mere found out that i was something like an oddity: no vans or compatibles, no band shirt, no baggy pants, no ; x \ dyed or short-cut hair, no tattoos, no necklaces, no anything that seems to define HC today. Well, i could weeny §=convince the friendly one that i understand german and he described the way to the camping ground. The camping ground was several kilometers from the the Akku and in the vicinity of a scouts organization. (i The people were real friendly and helpfull, recommending a place to set our tents. Said and done. Later we 3 ‘ learned that not all members of the HC community have tongues to speak and theese settled around the scout center and were swamped by the rain. Too bad. After we put up our tents we raced back to the Akku, not without refilling our beer supplies, and came just in time to hear that we missed the first band, Flaming Stars, Frankfurt. | have been told that they were nice ’ and believe this so far. Next came Constraint from whereever. Entering the Akku i was overwhelmed by the air, that was tough. But nontheless i stood there, bravely besting my sweat. It begun: two crunchy-munchy sounding guitars building a fat soundwall (hats off to the mixer), bassguitar starts buzzing, drummer beats his set and a voice like a dying pid screams something unintelligible. New school. Good spirited i endured (you notice, i am not into newschool) that sound, lots of kids seemed to be happy about it anyway and the band was enjoying itself. Fine atmoshere. After an hour it was all over. Happy attendants run into the open, catching air. Insurrection was a band i was looking forward to. Martin told me that the drummer was into deathmetal and that, besides everything efse, promised speed. And yes, they were fast, dirty and ... new school. They sucked! This fucking new school guitar sounds drown everything, you can't hear a rythm or melody it's shugga-shugga all the time. Needless to say the shouter was screaming like hell and you couldn't understand a word. But the drummer was okay, trying his best to insert something like groove and feeling but against this sound? Forget it. Now came a local band, called Lifeforce, and guess what, new school and vegan! Nothing against vegans, but i have been talking with a few locals that were attending the show and they told me that only the singer was vegan and that they adopted it for images sake. Filtering the typically envy out of it it still smells like image. Sorry. Back to the music. As said new school, somewhat moshy guitars and a screamer that my ears ; went crazy. You can't understand a thing that they sing. “ia - Veil has been one of my favorites since the glorious first EP on Threesome Recs. | knew that they changed Sa. 28 since then and that their LP on Frontline is shitty. But expected the best i got that. New school, yes, but with (]KC Tr rythm and style. During soundcheck they let the mixer do his job (which was, as always, excellent done) and KoOier Nobody demanded 'more bass, more bass' and thus we were presented a fine and tested show. Pile ons and sing-a-longs left everyone good spirited. | just recommend: get this metal touch out of your music. What a disappointment. ; Bi But then came Tappat, expecting not all too much from tanned and trained hardcore-clones i was surprised 5 to find one really good band. Something between Ignite and 7 Seconds they played good, straight HC with a metal edge to the guitars. The drummer is a true wonder and the singer has something like charisma. They ' Gun 3/b inspirited a feeling i only know from the past and in an instance i found myself singing along a few of the very Th cleverly selected coversongs (i.g. Uniform Choice ' Screaming for a change’ etc.) The show ended with a 10 KI minute version from 7 Seconds ‘stay young until i die’ masterpiece and a glorious pile-on which nearly ey reached the roof. Thank you for a good show. 4! After this came Sparkmarker but i don't like their Quicksand-Jump-Jump sound anyway so i took my leave ' as i heard that Mainstrike won't play any more. Baby Gopal suck (fucking rockstars) anyway and they can keep their Krsna stuff. | don't believe the attitude theese people bring along, so superiour and aloft that the supporting band of their actual tour (365 days a week) may not use the same bus, which has plenty of room, and must drive in it's own car. Don't watch their shows! A few more thing to this festival: | know it's hard to organize something like that and i don't mind anything. A big ‘Think again’ to people that complain about bad air in the stageroom, about missing bus connections, about far away camping grounds, about neighborhood football games (Bochum vs. Immenhausen, Immenhausen lost 10:0) about being charged for camping instead for free as promised, about band dropouts (Loxiran, Soma, Milgram, Rusty James, Mainstrike, Bart's Revenge) about the distance between camping ground and club, about food, about delays of schedule and a lot of other regulations put up by the organizator. Stinging 01/09/1997 Baffdecks / Recharge | SJZ Siegburg, 120 visitors Once again a show in the SJZ and this time it's big. Two major players of the german punk/hardcore scene offered their perfomrance. Both bands were on tour to promote their new records and therefore we had a lot of merchandise stuff lying around and as far as i can judge it, it sold. The plainly more known band, Baffdecks from Bruchsaal, played first. Whatever the mixer did to them, it was great. Seldom i have heard such a great sound, very intense and hard. They played a few classics and naturally all songs from their new album. It's truly amazing, they are pushed by SPV, which is a division of Motor Music but their lyrics are really good, very critical and perceptive, hail the writer, and i guess not very suited for a mass market. Well, they performed with a lot of hardcore-posing but were still good. Next came Recharge from Hanover. A lot of visitors left after Baffdecks and thus Recharge played before a diminished crowd, yes, yes, only the diehard remain. The sound were not so good, don't know why and as you may imagine Recharge plays a Discharge influenced HC/Punk-style but they long surpassed the old masters. ‘And to kill any rumors in advance: They are not a Discharge cover-band! They played it fast and straight and did a little punkrock-posing and their hair-do was fitting (great stuff i am writing here, hoh). Well, i think i made it clear they looked like punkers and they played like punkers. It was good and i liked it. And much too late for the club the evening closed. Thank you.
